Wellbutrin XL

Wellbutrin XL, also known by the generic name Bupropion, is a medication used for the treatment of depression and seasonal affective disorder. It is a timed-release version of regular Wellbutrin, intended to be taken once daily.

Wellbutrin XL is used to treat depression and seasonal affective disorder, but it is sometimes prescribed for other conditions. Some of these conditions include bipolar disorder, weight loss, Crohn's disease, restless leg syndrome, gambling addiction and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It can also be used as an aid to help quit smoking.

Wellbutrin XL works by restoring the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain. It's in the class of antidepressants known as norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors. This means that they prevent the reabsorption of dopamine and norepinephrine. It is not known why exactly this treats depression.

This medication comes in tablet form that is meant to be taken orally. It comes in 150 mg and 300 mg strengths. Both pills are white and round and clearly imprinted with "Wellbutrin XL" and the strength. It is intended to be taken once daily, as it is an extended release form, and the tablets should not be split, broken or damaged in any way.

Some of the most common side effects that should go away over the course of treatment include constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, weakness and changes in weight.

The medication is also sometimes associated with more severe side effects, and if any of these are experienced they should be reported immediately to the doctor who prescribed the medication. Some of these possible side effects are allergic reactions that include rash, hives, difficulty breathing or swelling; chest pain; delusions; heart palpitations; suicidal thoughts; a worsening of the condition for which the medication is being taken; any of the more common side effects that are severe or don't go away with time; vision changes and menstrual changes.
